Visas: A visa is required for visitors entering the UAE, an exception being citizens of GCC countries, who may enter without a visa. Holders of British passports with right of abode in Britain may be issued with visitors visas at the airport of entry. Visas for tourists travelling with tour operators are normally arranged by local hotels and airlines. All other prospective visitors should contact the visa section of their local UAE embassy.

Electricity: Domestic supply is 220 volts. Sockets suitable for three-pin 13 amp plugs of British standard design are the norm.

Opening hours: Most shopping centres open early and close late, often with an extended break in the mid-day heat. The cool of the evening is a favourite time for shopping. Government offices open at 7.30 a.m. and close at 1.30 p.m. Private offices tend to keep longer hours. Banks close at 1.00 p.m., except on Thursdays, the start of the weekend, when they close at 12 noon. All Government offices, banks etc. are closed on Fridays, the Islamic day of rest and prayer.

Car hire: Most of the large car hire firms are represented, as well as some local operators. Car hire rates can vary so it is best to shop around. The services of the larger reputable firms can be invaluable in case of emergency.

Driving: Driving is on the right and licences are required. Car hire companies can obtain temporary driving permits for hired car drivers. The road network is extremely good, however traffic regulations are strict, with radar and cameras in use by the police. It is illegal to leave the scene of an accident without police permission. Petrol is inexpensive.

Taxis: Taxis are readily available and offer an efficient, relatively inexpensive service.

Telecommunications: The telephone network is superb: local calls are free and direct dialling is available to 150 countries. All hotels offer fax facilities.

Photography: Film is readily available, so too are processing facilities. Ask permission before photographing people. Avoid photographing airports, docks, telecommunications equipment, government buildings, military and industrial installations.
