The
Feet And Their Problems Every
day our feet
get a major workout, which is not always a good
thing. As we force them into tiny shoes with
unnaturally high heels and then we walk, long
distances on unforgiving surfaces, not to
mention standing on them for hours on end..
Added to that, our feet do all this while
carrying the weight of our bodies. It's a lot to
ask and little wonder that we end up with feet
that look and feel as though they've been
dragged behind a runaway train. The summer
dawn's and we expect to be able to show them off
in strappy sandals. To bare your feet to the
world you need to give them the care that they
deserve. Once you do, a whole range of aches and
pains will disappear. Your feet keep your body
balanced and your posture correct - once you
throw them off balance, your body ends up out of
alignment as well. By wearing properly fitting
shoes, is one way to keep the body in check. Too
often we buy shoes that are, just a little too
wide or too tight purely because they are in
fashion. An ideal heel is about 2 cm to 4 cm,
but if you love really high heels and don't want
to give them up, make sure that you don't wear
them all the time and definitely not when you
will be doing a lot of walking.

Bathe
Your Feet A great
way to both relax and comfort your tired aching
feet, is to give them a foot soak bath while you
are relaxing on the sofa or arm chair. Just grab
a large enough for your feet, open brimmed tub
and fill with some nice warm water to which you
can add some nice soothing salts such as sea or
epson or if desired you can add some rose water
and if your prefer oils you can try some
rosemary, almond, olive, castor or lavender
oils. Don't go too heavy handed if using oils,
as just a little is all that you need for your
foot soak and also be wary when filling the tub
with water as the tub can become quite weighty,
especially if its a large one, so you may prefer
to position your tub in front of your seat first
and then just bring the warm water to it in
jugfuls or the like and play it safe always, by
mixing your warm water at the taps first so that
you don't run the risk of scalding yourself or
tripping yourself up with hot water. You can
also place some marbles in the bottom of your
foot tub for rolling your feet over as the
sensation of the marbles will invigorate your
soles. Be sure to keep a towel handy to dry your
feet off afterwards. When you do dry your feet
off, be sure to do a thorough job paying extra
attention to between your toes to stop any
moisture build up. Then if desired you can go
one further and give you feet a generous and
soothing all over foot massage using a rich
moisturizer such as a rosemary, peppermint or
lavender based cream, lotion or oil. Smother it
into your feet really well and by using your
thumbs, work the moisturizer firmly around the
ball of your foot, all along the arch and over
the heel and around your ankle.

Some
Foot Facts: The
average foot contains 125,000 sweat glands and
expels up to a half a cup of moisture every day. Your feet
swell to their largest in the afternoon, making
this the ideal time to shop for new shoes. Your feet
are complex structures of 28 bones laced with
muscles, ligaments and tendons. Women
have about four times as many foot problems as
men. Feet can
spread with age, so have yours measured often. Your
body's skin is at its thickest on your feet. Walking
is the best way to exercise your feet. Cutting
toenails down at the corners, may encourage
ingrowing nails. Our feet
have three weight bearing points: The base of
the little toe, the base of the big toe and the
heel.

Feet Tips: If you
suffer from athletes foot or blisters, a natural
antiseptic for this is tea tree oil. Try adding
some to a foot bath and then afterwards applying
a mixture of half of some of the tea tree oil
and half of some kitchen vegetable oil directly
on the area.
For
dry skin, you'll find that wheat germ oil with
its abundant levels of vitamins B and E will
smooth and nourish the skin, which makes it an
excellent remedy.
If you
manage to get your feet sunburnt, the first
thing you must do is reduce the redness. Cover
the tops of your feet with a layer of cold
natural yoghurt. If your soles are burnt, bathe
them in a basin of yoghurt. Slather with a
cooling aloe vera moisturizer and don't step
foot into the sun again until the burn subsides.
Cold
feet are often caused by poor circulation, so
take a little bit of carrier oil such as olive,
grape seed or almond and add a little bit of
ginger and sage essential oil, which will help
to stimulate the blood flow. The ginger oil
warms the feet and the sage oil helps reduce the
perspiration that makes your feet feel clammy.
If you
suffer from excessive sweaty feet, after drying
off your feet, sprinkle a mixture of baking
powder and corn starch over them. This works
really well in keeping your feet dry and also
helps to stop any odor.
For
rashes and inflammations, you'll find the many
unsaturated fats in jojoba oil will moisturize
and protect your skins surface. The oil will
also deeply penetrate into the skin to keep it
supple. Jojoba has anti inflammatory effects
which bring relief to skin plagued by eczema or
psoriasis.
For
cracked skin, soak your feet for 10 to 15
minutes in a foot bath. Add 1/2 cup of baking
soda to deodorize and cleanse. Dry your feet
thoroughly. Massage a balm or some sorbelene
cream thickly into the feet and then place a
plastic bag over each foot. Put socks on over
the bags and leave on for about an hour so the
balm soaks in.

| Ignoring
problems associated with your feet could lead to
more serious health issues further down the
track. While some problems can be fixed up at
home with a little tender loving care, others
may need the help of a professional. Listed
below are some common foot problems: |
| Smelly Feet |
Feet
sweat just like other parts of the body, but
because they are held in by shoes, the sweat is
unable to escape, bacteria manifests itself and
the result is smelly feet. To combat
the problem, wash your feet thoroughly everyday
and wipe them with a cotton wool ball soaked in
surgical spirits. There are also some good foot
powders and shoe pads on the market which will
help to absorb excess sweat.
|
| Callouses |
Those
hardened pieces of skin that form around the
toes and soles. Callouses are easily removed by
first soaking your feet in warm, soapy water and
then, using a pumice stone, gently rubbing the
hardened skin away. |
| Corns |
One of
the results of wearing shoes that don't fit
correctly, corns can be extremely painful as
they rub against your shoes when you walk. If
the corn is small, try removing it as you would
a callous, otherwise you will need to seek some
professional help to have it taken off for you. |
| Bunions |
When
your feet develop bunions you know that they are
crying out for help. Bunions look like big,
round knobs on the side of your foot and are
caused by wearing ill fitting shoes. There's
nothing you can do at home to fix the problem,
as the damage is already done. Seek the help of
a chiropodist. |
| Athlete's Foot |
This
fungal infection breeds in wet, steamy places
like swimming pools, gyms and shared showers.
Avoid the problem by wearing rubber thongs in
these areas. If you have contracted athlete's
foot, keep your feet dry at all times and try to
avoid excess sweating. To treat this problem
you'll need to apply a fungicidal cream from
your pharmacist.
