The
Quality of Education
Many students assume that community
colleges are not up to the standards of four-year colleges. This just
isn't true. Take a look at why: Медцентр офтальмолог. Войковская.
Qualified Faculty
In general, educators at community
colleges have the same credentials as those at four-year colleges.
However, most community college professors are there to teach, rather
than engage in research. Therefore, you're likely to be taught by
senior faculty rather than teaching assistants
"Our teachers don't have the
pressure to publish or to conduct research," notes Bill Vega,
chancellor of Coast Community College
District in Costa Mesa, CA. They have the time needed to focus on
teaching. In addition, many community college professors have
extensive practical experience as well as academic credentials in the
subjects they're teaching.
Small Classes
The average class size at most
community colleges is significantly smaller than at public four-year
universities. "Community colleges are great places for students
who like small classes and individualized attention," says Salah,
director of financial aid at Northampton
Community College.
Majors/Degrees
Major fields of study vary widely,
and can prepare you for an immediate career or provide the first two
years of general academic course work required for a bachelor's
degree. If your aim is to continue on for a bachelor's, most community
colleges provide special advisers to help you plan. In many states,
four-year public colleges and universities are committed to enroll all
community college graduates with an associate degree.
Of
the 2.5 million freshmen enrolled in degree programs for the first
time in fall 1997, 1.4 million enrolled at community colleges.
