How can you have a great college experience, get a quality education, and save money at the same time? Consider attending a community college. Community colleges provide an excellent education, whether you're considering an associates degree, a certificate program, technical training, or plan to continue your studies at a four-year college. Find out more about community colleges and why you should include them in your college search.

What Is a Community College?

Community colleges, often referred to as two-year colleges, award associate degrees at the completion of two years of full-time study. Most two-year colleges are public, but some are private (nonprofit and profit making). Community colleges also offer technical programs of study that prepare students for immediate entry into the job market. In addition, many offer the first two years of bachelor's degree program. These are called "transfer" or "university parallel" programs. Upon completion of these programs, students may enter bachelor's degree programs at the third-year level.
