What Is a Conversion Vehicle?

As the name suggests, a conversion is a modified version of an original vehicle that is conformed to suit a customer who is dissatisfied with the vehicle as it came from the factory. Conversions may alter the vehicle’s appearance and affect its operating characteristics, but changes are made mainly to enhance its level of comfort and convenience.

Conversions fall into four vehicle categories:

Chevrolet Express conversion
Full-size vans and minivans are popular conversion candidates because of their body style and roominess. This Chevrolet Express van features a raised roof and running boards, two of the more common conversion accessories.

Vans and minivans: Rear-drive, full-size vans are the prime candidates for conversion due to their abundant interior dimensions, reputation for durability and strong towing capacity. Any minivan can be custom-converted, but full-size vans come from only four original-equipment manufacturers: Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and GMC.

Pickup trucks: For decades, travelers have seen the virtues of a travel-trailerlike living unit mounted atop the truck’s cargo bed. Added styling cues are also popular enhancements for pickups.

Sport utility vehicles: SUVs are a more recent addition to the conversion market but are a strong candidate for growth in the future as they continue to draw away buyers from vans and minivans.

Passenger vehicles: Though these are less common, regular coupes, sedans and wagons can be modified for special uses, including operation by the disabled, and for styling and performance preferences.

Conversion companies, also known as “upfitters,” typically purchase a basic vehicle or a stripped chassis from its original manufacturer. Then, at their own plant, they make all the modifications needed — including extra comfort and convenience features — to make it salable to a special sort of customer.

Chevrolet S-10 conversion
Custom styling cues, including vinyl graphics and tubular bed rails, are among the popular conversions you will see on pickup trucks such as this Chevrolet S-10.
Most conversion vans can seat seven, but a few extended-length models squeeze in as many as 12 and can typically sleep two to four people. Because oversize seats are commonly installed, the final passenger capacity is often lower than what the vehicle may offer in its basic passenger-carrying form.

Conversion vans have a loyal following based on the comfort, convenience and uniqueness of the vehicles. Plenty of owners have owned four or five conversion vans in the past and are likely to consider buying another.

Two other types of recreational vehicles take other forms but are not considered conversions: travel trailers and motor homes. Travel trailers are separate units that must be towed by a car or truck and either are made entirely of metal or incorporate a tent structure. Motor homes are self-contained travel units, similar in principle to conversion vans but larger in size and considerably more expensive.

Honda Civic conversion
The Honda Civic and other compacts are a popular choice among younger people who want styling and performance conversions.
Although conversion vehicles created for the recreational travel market get the bulk of attention and account for a large share of sales, that’s only part of the picture. Vehicles also are converted for “professional needs” applications for businesses and commercial use, serving as mobile offices or places of business. Additional conversions are created to meet the special-needs requirements of the physically disabled. Additionally, vans, in particular, may be cosmetically converted for customers who don’t plan on taking long trips but simply like the idea of driving a vehicle with distinctive styling.

Finally, vehicles can be converted in other ways for special commercial purposes, such as snow-plowing, or for the pleasure of towing a trailer or boat.
