What Is a Conversion Vehicle? |
|||||||||||||
|
As the name suggests, a conversion is a
modified version of an original vehicle that is conformed to suit a
customer who is dissatisfied with the vehicle as it came from the
factory. Conversions may alter the vehicle’s appearance and affect
its operating characteristics, but changes are made mainly to enhance
its level of comfort and convenience.
Conversions fall into four vehicle categories:
Pickup trucks: For decades, travelers have seen the virtues of a travel-trailerlike living unit mounted atop the truck’s cargo bed. Added styling cues are also popular enhancements for pickups. Sport utility vehicles: SUVs are a more recent addition to the conversion market but are a strong candidate for growth in the future as they continue to draw away buyers from vans and minivans. Passenger vehicles: Though these are less common, regular coupes, sedans and wagons can be modified for special uses, including operation by the disabled, and for styling and performance preferences. Conversion companies, also known as “upfitters,” typically purchase a basic vehicle or a stripped chassis from its original manufacturer. Then, at their own plant, they make all the modifications needed — including extra comfort and convenience features — to make it salable to a special sort of customer.
Conversion vans have a loyal following based on the comfort, convenience and uniqueness of the vehicles. Plenty of owners have owned four or five conversion vans in the past and are likely to consider buying another. Two other types of recreational vehicles take other forms but are not considered conversions: travel trailers and motor homes. Travel trailers are separate units that must be towed by a car or truck and either are made entirely of metal or incorporate a tent structure. Motor homes are self-contained travel units, similar in principle to conversion vans but larger in size and considerably more expensive.
Finally, vehicles can be converted in other ways for special commercial purposes, such as snow-plowing, or for the pleasure of towing a trailer or boat.
