The
Elise represents a return to roots for the British sports car firm. A
modern incarnation of the legendary Lotus Seven, the Elise was developed
at the behest of (then owner) Romano Artioli, and named for his
granddaughter. The Elise makes use of lightweight materials and
construction techniques to simultaneously achieve low mass and high
strength. The former quality allows the Rover 1.8 liter four cylinder
engine to push the Elise to 60 mph in under 6 seconds. The mid-engine
layout, as well as Lotus’ unquestioned expertise in suspension design
and tuning, endows the Elise with the precise, stable handling one would
expect of a former Formula One Constructor’s World Championship builder.
The Elise is the perfect embodiment of Colin Chapman’s philosophy of
light weight sports cars reflecting innovative engineering solutions. Were
he alive to see it, the Elise would surely rate "The Master’s"
approval to be called a Lotus. |
