BUYING A NEW CAR

Having narrowed down the search, it's time to head back down to the dealership for a test drive of your likely candidates.

Test drivers range from hooligans who are simply out to break the car, right down to those who have the salesman drive them, chauffeur-like, around the block. And with shuddering voice, let's not forget those who fork out the readies without having even set foot inside a demonstration car. link

Do not add to the numbers of these lost souls. Fail this, and you'll end up with an inappropriate set of wheels at best, and a motor you can't even fit into if luck isn't on your side. And, let's be honest, you'll deserve it.

A test drive is the perfect opportunity to break the ice. It's a chance to find out if a car is the Prince Charming it was portrayed as in the advert, or the toad which can't be shifted from the dealer's books.

Think carefully about how well the car fits you. Not just physically, but how does it sit with your driving style? Can it turn on a sixpence or is it outmanouvered by the ship it came in on? Equally, does a prod on the accelerator leave you sorely unimpressed or scared witless? Any one of these might be a reason to look elsewhere.

Think carefully about how well suited the car is to your needs now it's up close. Will the kids need to become contortionists to get to, or to fit in the back seats? Will the ample boot space only fit your golf clubs once they're cut in half, and will your sporty new number give you hell in an inner-city scrum.

Don't forget that the salesman is there only to assist you. If he chats too much, tell him you need to listen to the engine. If he's intent on demonstrating the marvellous stereo, he doesn't want you to hear the engine. If he's clueless, overly pushy or rude, ask to speak to another and if they're no better, walk out the door. It won’t be far to the next dealership, even one selling the same make.

Finally, it's worth remembering that these days, there are very few truly bad cars left on the market, but a test drive properly executed will ensure that the one you opt for really is your kind of wonderful.

  • Don't just test your first choice - try out your top five.
  • Always take a test drive of at least 20 minutes. Use it constructively and not as a joyride.
  • Make sure your route includes some motorway, a twisty A-road and some heavy traffic.
  • Remember your expectations and note how the car departs from them in the flesh.
  • Keep in mind how you will use the car and make sure it fits your needs.
